Story
Footage shows aftermath following Russia launch a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine involving almost 300 attack drones on Monday Jan 12, 2026, most of them Iranian-designed Shahed-type drones, along with 18 ballistic missiles and seven cruise missiles. In a statement posted on social media, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the primary targets of the strikes were energy generation facilities and electrical substations, resulting in widespread damage to civilian and residential infrastructure. He said multiple regions were hit, including Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Donetsk, as air defence systems worked to repel the assault. Zelenskyy said missiles struck a postal terminal in Korotych, in the Kharkiv region, killing four people. He said the site had no military purpose and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. The Ukrainian president said the situation in the Kyiv region remained difficult, with several hundred thousand households left without electricity following the strikes. Emergency services were deployed across affected areas, and so-called “Points of Invincibility” — centres providing heat, power, and basic services — were activated to support residents. Zelenskyy said the attacks underscored the need for sustained international support, particularly for air defence systems, as winter conditions intensify pressure on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. “Missiles for air defence systems are needed every day, and especially during winter,” he said, calling for the accelerated delivery of military assistance already agreed with the United States and European partners. He added that Russia would not succeed in using cold weather as a weapon, and thanked countries and individuals continuing to support Ukraine’s defence and recovery efforts. Russia has not commented on the latest claims. The scale of damage and casualty figures could not be independently verified.
