Story
Aurora footage shows bright streams of green and purple light rippling across the night side of Earth as seen from aboard the International Space Station, during a recent orbit. The video was published by an astronaut with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and captures intensified auroral activity viewed from space. Scientists say increased solar activity in recent days has driven especially vivid auroras, as charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. Auroras are typically visible near the polar regions from the ground, but footage from orbit offers a rare, wide-angle view of the phenomenon stretching across the planet’s horizon.
